Sarah Hargreaves answered on 7 Mar 2016:

Fission is how we get nuclear energy.

In fission we split the nucleus of an atom in two. When this happens lots of energy is released, which is then used to heat water and turn into steam, which is then used to turn turbines. The turbines then create electricity.

So instead of the nuclear scientist asking for fish and chips, he asked for fission and chips instead : )
